A dangerous dark lord will appear in the new series of the magical universe, whose first episode, starring Newt Scamander, the magizoologist, opens on November 18.
There is less than a month left for the premiere of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the prequel of Harry Potter coming to cinemas on November 18. In Screenrush we have already spoken about Gellert Grindelwald, a dark magician, a former friend of Albus Dumbledore, who has terrorized Europe in the early twentieth century. And now, we know that Grindelwald has an important role in the next four movies confirmed to be released. We have decided to bring you all the necessary information about this dark character, so do not miss any details.
His Origins and Education
Gellert Gridelwald is born somewhere in Eastern Europe in 1882, and he has studied at Dumstrang Institute, one of the three most famous magical schools in Europe, for most of his adolescence. Every good potterhead knows Dumstrang as one of the schools that has participated in the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, with Viktor Krum as the representative.
Dumstrang has a reputation as a tolerant school to dark arts, so most students grow up being very advantageous in this field, as was the case of Gellert Grindelwald, who not only became an expert, but also led beyond the dark magic and began to experiment with some classmates. This caused his expulsion from the center with 16 years. Magical History books describe him as a sociopath and a person with a huge ego who also lived obsessed with magical traditions and power. Soon, he has discovered a legend that talked about three powerful objects: Deathly Hallows. Do you remember?
Dumbledore and the Deathly Hallows
Grindewald began to seek the Relics to become the Lord of Death and thus establish order in the magical world that would allow witches and wizards live in the sight of the muggles.
His search led him to Godric’s Hollow, where Harry Potter himself was born, because there had died Ignatus Peverell, the original holder of the Invisibility Cloak, one of the relics if you remember. Harry and Hermione discover the tomb of Peverell in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. There, Grindelwald stayed at her aunt Bathilda Bagshot and met Albus Dumbledore, who also lived there at his youth. Both connected right away: both wanted to find the Deathly Hallows, both were extremely intelligent and very skilled in magic and both wanted to remove the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, by which all wizards had to live hidden from muggles.
But do not forget that although the friendship was sincere, Grindelwald was a control freak and ambitious, and wanted to take control of the magical world because he felt inferior to other people and did not trust anyone but Albus Dumbledore.
Dumbledore had more noble intentions: he wanted to remove the magic secret to control the hatred and xenophobia of muggles towards wizards and witches. In fact, an attack by a group of muggle townies had made infuriate Albus’s sister, Ariana Dumbledore. In one of her crisis, since she could not control her powers, she accidentally killed her mother. The father, at such injustice, decided to take revenge from the muggles who had made Ariana sick and therefore was sent to Azkaban prison, where he died later. That’s why Dumbledore also craved for the Deathly Hallows to use the Resurrection Stone and bring his parents back.
And why is family history of Dumbledore so important, if this goes on Grindelwald? This relationship between the two was what caused the awakening of Gellert Grindelwald as the greatest dark wizard of all time, with the permission of Voldemort.
Aberforth Dumbledore, upon learning of his brother Albus plans to flee with Grindelwald in search of the Relics, began a discussion that caused him to launch the curse Crucio. When Albus came out in defense of his brother, the matter ended up as a duel between three sides Gellert, Albus and Aberforth, which ended with the tragic accidental death of Ariana. After this, they were separated and Grindelwald fled the country to begin his plan of domination alone and, in turn, find the relics of death.
The Dark Magician
In the following years, as dark wizard Grindelwald honed his dark arts and created an army of undeads to take over European wizarding society which is told in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Dumbledore also became the powerful wizard that we have met in the saga of Harry Potter, but never went to arrest him because he was afraid to discover which of the two had killed his sister Ariana accidentally.
Meanwhile, Grindelwald finally discovered the whereabouts of one of the Hallows, the Elder Wand, which was held by Mykew Gregorovitch, one of the best craftsmen of magic wands of the wizarding world if we do not have Ollivander, who did run the rumor that he was trying to clone a powerful wand. Gellert Grindelwald beat him and thus got the Elder Wand.
Until 1945, year in which he was defeated by Dumbledore, Grindelwald extended his dark army and even created a prison, Nurmengard, to imprison enemies who he did not murder. Although not as deadly as Lord Voldemort, Grindelwald expanded its reign of terror by the European continent and reached the ears of American magical government, Macusa, as you can hear in the trailer of Fantastic Beasts, whose action takes place in 1926. In addition, as muggles were immersed in the world wars, for Grindelwald it was much easier to hide its massacres in the eyes of the non-magical.
In 1945, the situation was untenable, so Dumbledore stepped in and his old friend was confronted by the man who had also felt something romantic, resulting in the most epic and powerful magical duel of all the history of magic: Gellert Grindelwald against Albus Dumbledore. Albus was the winner and managed to lock Gellert in Nurmengard, ironically, where he spent 33 years until the very Lord Voldemort came to his cell to ask him about the Elder Wand Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. After discovering the wand was held by Dumbledore, Voldemort killed Grindelwald.
Thanks to an interview with director David Yates and screenwriter and author J.K. Rowling about the prequel, we know that Gellert Grindelwald have something to do with the saga ‘Perhaps as a villain in this’ – so we die of looking forward to the November 18 to start getting answers.
