Jacob Kowalski is a No-Maj who lived in United States at the beginning of 20th century. No-Maj is a term used for people having no magical powers and having no parents with magical powers. A more common word for No-Maj is Muggle. Jacob is an enthusiastic character. He has worked in a factory for most of his life, however he has always dreamed of being a baker. He is the first Muggle appearing as a main character in the Harry Potter universe movies so far.
Kowalski attended World War 1 returned before 1920. After he came back to America, he started working for a factory in New York. He had a girlfriend after a while. His relationship had not gone well he had broken up with his girlfriend just before he met the traveller magizoologist Newt Scamander. It was 1926, when he met Newt Scamander just after Newt has arrived New York with his magical case hosting several magical creatures from far parts of the world. Newt and Jacob has become good companies in hard times for Newt. And Jacob gets well acquainted with the magical world during this adventurous period. Jacob has witnessed the magical creatures escaping from Newt’s suitcase and lives an unpleasant experience with an angry murtlap that has just broken free.

Dan Fogler gives life to Jacob Kowalski in the upcoming Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Dan has let out that his character Jacob has an old Brooklyn accent reminding Lou Costello, the famous comedian of early twentieth century.
